On the morning of March 30, the Municipality of Loures held a workshop on the importance of air quality and its relationship with the management of green spaces, which took place in the Environmental Education Center, located in the Urban Park of Santa Iria da Azóia, in Loures.
The activity brought together 26 participants, including technicians and operators related to the management of green spaces. It was promoted under the project "PAB_LivingLab - Vive a Descarbonização no Parque Adão Barata", a project funded by the EEA Grants Environment Program, which aims to reduce the carbon intensity of the enterprises and services of Parque Adão Barata (PAB), in Loures, through the implementation of innovative technological solutions, thus contributing to creating the necessary bases for a sustainable urban environment.
The commitment to environmental sustainability and the awareness of the need for continued investment in public policies aimed at reducing the impacts of air pollution on cities and the quality of life of society is an integral part of the project's objectives and was one of the axes around which this workshop was built.
The workshop was aimed at technicians and operatives linked to the management of green spaces and structured by four formative moments. It began with a brief framework around its purpose and objectives in the PAB_LivingLab project, which was done by Ana Catarina Sabino, a member of the Energy and Environmental Sustainability Division of the Municipality Loures one of the project's partners entities.
The action continued in the voice of Marta Almeida, Researcher at the Center for Nuclear Sciences and Technologies of the Higher Technical Institute (ist), with the approach to one of the workshop's themes, from the book A.Tu.Ar – For a better Air Quality (2020), developed by the Higher Technical Institute and the Municipality of Loures, partner entities of PAB_LivingLab. Here, a contextualization was made about the problem surrounding air quality – from identifying factors that influence concentrations of air pollutants, indoors and outdoors, to their impact on the quality of life and health of the people who frequent them. Examples and helpful guidance and advice have been provided so that each participant can improve air quality in the spaces they frequent, whether indoors or outdoors. The challenges and why air pollution is an environmental problem with negative impacts on public health, the economy or the built heritage have also been assessed.
For Marta Almeida, Researcher at the Center for Nuclear Sciences and Technologies of the Instituto Superior Técnico (ist) and one of the authors involved in the writing of A.Tu.Ar – Por uma melhor Qualidade do Ar (2020): "the promotion of a grounded knowledge about the risks and challenges that compromise the environmental balance is as important as the transmission of precise guidelines on the measures and practices that can be adopted either by technicians/operational, linked to these areas or by the community. Awareness of the need for widespread adoption of more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices is an ongoing process, absolutely unavoidable and necessary, which must be continued, in particular, through workshops such as this and, guaranteed, through the activities that will be promoted, at this level, within the PAB_LivingLab project".
This theme has received special attention from the Municipality of Loures, promoting policies, actions and measures to improve environmental sustainability in the Municipality. According to Ana Catarina Sabino, who intervened in the initiative on behalf of the Municipality of Loures, the topics addressed in this workshop are two significant concerns for the Municipality. Among the measures implemented to improve air quality, for example, in the Municipality of Loures, we highlight "the investment in promoting the use of public transport; the creation of new sections of bike lanes and the commitment to the construction of new green parks and gardens that reinforce the municipal green structure".
The workshop focused also on the management of green spaces. The challenges to efficiently managing resources were addressed, namely concerning the rational use of water in public green spaces.
A concern incorporated in one of the activities that will be developed within the PAB_LivingLab that, according to Susana Damasceno, President of AIDGLOBAL, the project's promoter, "intends to develop integrated technological solutions and implement measures aimed at more efficient resource management and that promote the increase of the carbon sequestration potential of Parque Adão Barata, in Loures".
The SEE H2OExhibition - A new look at water use – a show about the conservation of water resources throughout its urban cycle – marked the end of this formative action, making the public aware of the importance of seeking to improve and value the management of water resources.
PAB_LivingLab – Vive a decarbonização no Parque Adão Barata is a project that runs from May 1, 2021, to April 30, 2024, financed by the Environment Program of the EEA Grants, has as its promoting entity AIDGLOBAL – Action and Integration for Global Development –, and as partners Loures City Council, Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon, bim+, dstsolar and Innovation Point.
